Colombian Coffee

The Andes mountains cut right through the middle of Colombia, giving it the ideal climate and soil conditions for the cultivation of coffee in part of one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth. Although a small country, Colombia is one of the world's leading coffee producers. Colombian coffee has long been highly prized.

Jesuit priests might have been responsible for introducing coffee growing to this area in the 1700's. The first plantations were certainly active by the end of the eighteenth century and the first recorded exports of coffee came from Colombia to the US in 1835. Soon after, coffee had become Colombia's most important export crop and coffee taxes became a major source of revenue for the government.

In more recent times, the National Federation of Coffee Growers was established as a social organization to represent the interests of the small scale coffee growers, of which there are over 500,000. As a way to gain attention, they invented Juan Valdez, their fictional spokesman, who has become the face of Colombian coffee. He usually appears with his mule Conchita and carrying a sack of beans.

Much of the coffee in Colombia is shade-grown. This means the coffee plants grow under a canopy of assorted types of tree in a diverse ecological setting. Caribou Colombian coffee is certified by the Rainforest Alliance which strives to ensure that working forests are managed according to rigorous sustainability standards, and that the coffee producers receive a fair return for their crops.

Caribou Colombian makes a smooth cup of coffee with hints of sweet caramel and roasted nuts, and is available in K-cups for Keurig single cup brewers. Each K-Cup portion pack is an air-tight, mini-brewer that locks out oxygen, light and humidity while locking in freshness and flavor, so that when you brew it you still get that freshly ground aroma from your coffee.
